Introduction to UTC

Peek has been the leading expert in the supply and installation of innovative traffic solutions for over 20 years. Today, the company capability in Urban Traffic Management and Control forms an integrated part of a wider network management and information system approach. The UTC system may be combined with automatic vehicle location for signal priority, and exchange data with this and other systems, as well as providing meaningful information to the traveling public. The system is complemented by a complete range of variable message signs, signals, controllers, vehicle detection and monitoring outstations. In support of these systems Peek offer a full range of services including Traffic Engineering, Training, and Maintenance.

The company has continued to keep the traffic management system up to date by adding facilities and interfaces, upgrading hardware, and incorporating the latest additions to the SCOOT traffic adaptive strategy.

The Peek Traffic Management System (TMS) has the capability of monitoring and controlling a wide range and variety of traffic signal controllers.

The standard Peek TMS instation comprises a DEC Alpha or Integrity Server for control of up to 1200 intersections. With several machines networked as a multi cell system, the number of nodes is multiplied by the number of cells.

UTMC:

UTMC, Urban Traffic Management and Control, is a DfT funded initiative leading to the next generation of open traffic management solutions. Peek has been actively involved in this programme since day one, a role that is fully supported by our latest products and software. The Peek Chameleon is the industry's first fully UTMC compliant communications device which interfaces to traffic signalling equipment via an IP connection. The Peek Traffic Management System fully supports the traffic data objects from version 2 of the Data Object Registry, and seamlessly integrates with any UTMC compliant Common Database.

Peek was the design authority and developer of the SUPS (Simple UTC Protocol Specification), which enables open communications at the instation level between the different traffic signal manufacturers street equipment. All Peek's traffic management systems supplied since 2002 support the SUPS protocol.

Peek has supplied UTMC compliant systems and components to Preston, Bedford, Glasgow, Stoke, York, Leeds, M25 Sphere and Sheffield, and our commitment to the UTMC programme continues, with our next-generation controller, scheduled for release in 2006, fully UTMC compliant.

Peek is a founder member of the UTMC Suppliers Forum.
